Thomas Tunaley Snr

b. 1772.

m. Elizabeth Potter,

16-10-1795.

Thomas d. Derby, 10 September, 1848.

1851 census (2 years after Thomas Snr. died) has William with his wife and seven children living at 5 Market Place, Derby (although this could well be 5, Exeter Place, Derby - see 1861 census below). Previously (1841) Charles had been living at a less opulent Upper Brook St., Derby.

1861 Census has William, wife Ann and four children living at 5, Exeter Place, Derby, just across the River Derwent from the Market Place.

1871 Census-same address as 1861.

1881 Census - William and wife Ann had died three years previously (1878) and son Charles Tunaley is given as living at 3 Elm Street Derby, approximately a mile north of the Market Place.

Charles' occupation is given as blacksmith, indicating the dyeing business to have folded.

Son Henry is not mentioned in the 1881 or 1891 census records but reappears, married, in the 1891 census.

Tunaley Thos Jnr. Silk Dyer 7, Derwent Street.

Elizabeth Potter

m. Thomas Tunaley Snr., 16-10-1795

Elizabeth d. Derby, 5

November 1843, aged 72

years.

1851 Census has John Tunaley (who married Sarah Wood 1847) living at Full Street Derby, also close to the Market Place (see bottom centre panel)

In 1841, John had been living with his father Thomas Snr. at Tenant Street (for further information click here). here )

Samuel Tunaley is now ensconsed at Tenant Street with his wife Patience and family (previously living-1841- at Derwent Row, Derby). See also Henry Tunaley.

Edward Tunaley, occupation carpenter, is listed as at 69 Bridge Gate Derby, half a mile North of the Market Place.

Previously (1841) Edward had been listed as at Albion Place, Derby, a less than salubrious area. However, it is likely that this address was Edward's workplace rather than his residence (see bottom centre panel)
