1871 Census, Charles is listed as a baker/grocer living at 24, Watson Street, Derby. This is seven years before Charles' father William died.

1881 Census, Charles' father and mother William and Ann have both died (1878). Charles, himself, is now listed as blacksmith with family living at 3 Elm Street, Derby, St Alkmund. It is noted that both Watson Street (see 1871 census above) and Elm Street are mentioned in father William's will.

1891 Census: Charles listed as Ironsmith.

Son, Charles W. working as labourer, Florence as net mender, Maria as pupil teacher and John as "scholar." No mention of Elizabeth.

1901 census: Charles still living at 3 Elm Street - occupation given as blacksmith.

John, aged 21, only "child" in household now mentioned - occupation of John given as "general labourer".

Charles died that year, but wife Caroline lived another 28 years.
