Samuel b. Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordhire, and, as at 1891, apprenticed in the bicycle trade, Nottingham.

Author: As regards emigration 1904, it seems little coincidence that the world famous Raleigh Cycles bicycle manufacturer was founded in Nottingham 1887, (see Wikipedia here) and the iconic Sturmey Archer company for bicycle hub gear founded in Nottiingham 1902 (see Wikipedia here).

With a potentially huge export market in America, there would have been considerable demand there for Sam's skills.
