William: served in the Royal Navy from 02 March

1911 until 01 March 1923, when he joined the

RFR in Portsmouth. At the time he joined the

Royal Navy, he was described as a Carter. After

his military service, he worked for British

Railways as a pattern maker until his

retirement, after which he had a variety of

part-time jobs right up to his death in 1973.

 

William served on several ships including the

training establishments HMS Victory II (Crystal

Palace) and HMS Vernon (Portsmouth), and battle

cruisers HMS New Zealand, HMS Renown, HMS

Sappho, HMS Invincible, HMS Leviathan, HMS

Apollo, HMS Fox and HMS Antrim. His record

shows that he was also stationed on Pembroke

II, Columbine Vampire and Columbine Worcester,

although no information regarding these vessels

has yet been found. His wartime service was

spent predominantly on board HMS Leviathan,

which had been deployed in the Russo Japanese

War in 1905-6. During World War 1, it was part

of the 6th cruiser squadron, Grand Fleet, 5th

cruiser squadron (Dec 1914), 6th cruiser

squadron (Jan 1915) and was deployed in North

America and the West Indies station as a

flagship.
