William: served his apprenticeship at
British Railways Locomotive works where
he stayed for the following 47 years. For
the majority of that time he worked in No 8
shop erecting steam locomotives; when these
were replaced by diesel-electric locomotives
he became supervisor of the workshop where
fuel injection units were overhauled and
worked there until he retired in 1982. He
was an active member of the works cricket
team and remained involved with the sport
as an umpire after his playing days were
over. He also umpired regularly for one
of the teams in which son Martin played
(Grasshoppers).
